The Culture Department of Sindh is dedicated to preserving and promoting the province’s rich cultural heritage, supporting literary activities, protecting archaeological sites and heritage buildings, and providing welfare to intellectuals, writers, poets, and artists.
The Culture Department originated as a “Culture Cell” in the Education Department in 1976 and became an Administrative Department in 1988. It evolved over time, finally becoming a standalone department in 2009.
Following the 18th Amendment in 2011, the Culture Department assumed responsibility for managing all archaeological sites, monuments, and museums previously overseen by the Federal Government, expanding the department’s scope and responsibilities.
The Culture Department promotes heritage through cultural activities, festivals, and public events held in cultural complexes, auditoriums, folk studios, and arts councils across Sindh, along with collaborating with private sector organizations when needed.
The department supports literary activities by maintaining public libraries, publishing books, hosting conferences, and inviting scholars, writers, and poets to share their work at departmental seminars and events.
The Culture Department is responsible for preserving and conserving Sindh’s archaeological sites, monuments, and museums. It initiates development projects and collaborates with local and international sources to fund preservation efforts.
Under the Sindh Cultural Heritage (Preservation) Act, 1994, the department regulates and protects heritage buildings. A Heritage Cell manages listings and delistings as per the Act.
The department has an Endowment Fund to offer one-time financial support to those in need and provides monthly stipends through a Grant-in-Aid program. Additional support includes the Legend’s Trust and assistance from the Chief Minister of Sindh.
The Culture Department currently operates 42 public libraries in major cities across Sindh, with plans to establish more libraries in all taluka headquarters and selected towns.
Individuals or organizations interested in cultural preservation can reach out to the Culture Department for potential partnerships or support in ongoing or upcoming projects related to Sindh’s cultural heritage.
